The Importance of Reaching Out When We Struggle: Embracing Vulnerability in the Pursuit of Emotional Intelligence

By July 19, 2023July 21st, 2023No Comments9 min read

As a senior analyst who has undergone various training sessions and embarked on a deeper journey of self-discovery, I have come to realize that emotional intelligence goes beyond merely understanding and managing our emotions. Emotional intelligence, often referred to as EQ, plays a pivotal role in our personal and professional lives, enhancing our ability to connect with others, make sound decisions, and navigate life’s challenges. One of the core components of emotional intelligence is emotional restraint, also known as emotional self-control or emotional discipline. Emotional restraint encompasses the ability to manage and regulate one’s emotions effectively, even in the face of adversity or intense situations.

What Is Emotional Restraint or Self-Control

It also involves recognizing when we need help and being willing to reach out for support during times of struggle. Emotional restraint, also known as emotional self-control or emotional discipline, is a core component of emotional intelligence and overall well-being. Often, society perceives vulnerability as a weakness, leading many to shy away from sharing their emotional struggles with others. I was also one of these people who wanted nothing to do with vulnerability. I was raised knowing that “Monna ke nku ha a lle” which translates to “Men don’t cry”. However, embracing vulnerability is a strength that fosters stronger connections and deeper understanding among individuals. When we allow ourselves to be vulnerable, we open the door to empathy and compassion from others, and we give them the opportunity to support us in meaningful ways.

The journey to emotional intelligence and self-discovery can be challenging at times. It may involve confronting past traumas, understanding our core beliefs, and breaking down emotional barriers that we have built over the years. Especially those myths about the limitations of us African Black people. You know our limitations even if you are not Black or African. Our mental limitation and emotional stupidity, the opposite of intelligence, have been well written about. During this unlearning process, there may be moments when we feel overwhelmed, lost, or uncertain about how to navigate our emotions effectively.

At such times, reaching out to others for support can be transformative. Whether it’s confiding in a close friend, seeking guidance from a mentor, or engaging in therapy with a trained professional, sharing our struggles can provide us with new perspectives, insights, and coping strategies. I was fortunate that my employer had a deep budget for training and employee development. This is why we were encouraged to attend group sessions to improve our emotional intelligence. It also reinforces the understanding that we are not alone in our emotional journey and that there are others who can relate to and empathize with our experiences.

Moreover, expressing our vulnerabilities and seeking help is a testament to our emotional maturity. It shows that we are aware of our limitations and recognize the value of seeking external support when needed. By doing so, we exemplify one of the key aspects of emotional intelligence – the ability to adapt and grow through self-awareness and self-improvement. In my own experiences, I have witnessed the power of vulnerability and reaching out for support. When I faced personal and professional challenges, sharing my struggles with trusted colleagues and mentors helped me gain valuable insights and advice that I wouldn’t have gained in isolation. Moreover, it strengthened the relationships I had with those individuals, creating a deeper sense of trust, and understanding. Ofcause I didn’t get it right at first so don’t be discouraged when you don’t seem to have anyone in your corner at first.

To encourage the practice of reaching out when we struggle, we must foster a culture that embraces vulnerability and promotes open communication. In workplaces and communities, leaders can set the tone by sharing their own vulnerabilities and encouraging their teams to do the same. By creating a safe space for emotional expression, we can break down the stigma associated with seeking help and foster an environment of empathy and support. Emotional restraint is vital to emotional intelligence, and its benefits extend to various aspects of our lives. By managing and regulating our emotions effectively, we can improve our decision-making, relationships, and overall well-being. However, the journey to emotional intelligence is not without its challenges, and there may be times when we struggle to navigate our emotions alone.

As someone who has embraced vulnerability in my pursuit of emotional intelligence, I can attest to the positive impact of reaching out for support. By embracing vulnerability, we open ourselves to empathy, understanding, and growth. It is essential to remember that seeking help is not a sign of weakness, but a display of strength and a commitment to our emotional well-being. So, let us break the barriers of societal norms, embrace vulnerability, and support one another in our journey towards emotional intelligence and self-discovery. Especially given how I attended various training sessions and embarked on a deeper journey of self-discovery, I have come to appreciate the significance of emotional intelligence and the transformative power of emotional restraint.

The Benefits of Strengthening Emotional Restraint

Cultivating emotional restraint is a journey that requires dedication, self-awareness, practice, and patience. It involves recognizing emotions as they arise, understanding their underlying causes, and choosing how to respond in a way that aligns with one’s values and goals. Developing emotional intelligence and integrating mindfulness techniques into daily life can be invaluable in strengthening emotional restraint. The benefits have been well written about and it includes:

  • Conflict Management: Emotions can run high during conflicts or disagreements, often leading to irrational responses. Emotional restraint enables individuals to approach conflicts more rationally, fostering open communication and constructive problem-solving, rather than escalating tension.
  • Enhanced Decision-Making: Emotional restraint prevents impulsive decisions influenced by intense emotions. By keeping emotions in check, individuals can make more objective and rational choices, ultimately leading to better outcomes.
  • Improved Interpersonal Relationships: Emotionally restrained individuals are perceived as trustworthy and reliable partners in personal and professional relationships. By managing emotions, they can communicate more effectively, empathize with others, and build stronger connections.
  • Reduced Stress and Anxiety: Emotionally restrained individuals are less likely to be overwhelmed by negative emotions, allowing them to handle stressful situations with greater resilience and composure.
  • Better Performance and Productivity: Emotional restraint enables individuals to stay focused and engaged in tasks, free from being excessively influenced by emotional distractions. This focus contributes to improved performance and productivity in all areas of life.
  • Resilience and Adaptability: Fostering emotional restraint contributes to greater resilience, enabling individuals to bounce back from setbacks and adapt to change and uncertainty more effectively.
  • Positive Communication: Emotionally restrained individuals are less prone to engaging in hurtful or offensive communication. They can express their thoughts and feelings in a constructive and respectful manner, contributing to healthier interactions.
  • Personal Growth and Self-Awareness: Embracing emotional restraint leads to a deeper understanding of one’s emotional triggers and responses. This heightened self-awareness empowers individuals to proactively address emotional challenges and engage in positive self-reflection.
  • Emotional Health and Well-Being: Suppressing or impulsively reacting to intense emotions can have detrimental effects on mental and physical health. Emotional restraint helps maintain emotional balance, contributing to overall well-being.

The Positive Impact of Emotional Intelligence

Research on emotional intelligence and its impact on individuals and society has garnered overwhelmingly positive feedback. Numerous studies have demonstrated the significance of emotional intelligence in various domains:

  • In the workplace, employees with higher emotional intelligence tend to have better job performance, leadership skills, and job satisfaction. They also experience lower levels of stress and burnout.
  • In educational settings, students with higher emotional intelligence exhibit greater social competence, empathy, and academic achievement. They are more likely to have positive relationships with peers and teachers.
  • In personal relationships, emotional intelligence contributes to more satisfying and lasting partnerships. Emotionally intelligent individuals are better equipped to understand and support their partners, fostering healthier relationships.
  • In mental health, emotional intelligence is associated with lower levels of anxiety, depression, and other psychological issues. It acts as a protective factor against mental health challenges.
  • In leadership roles, emotional intelligence is linked to effective decision-making, conflict resolution, and team building. Leaders with higher emotional intelligence inspire trust and motivation in their teams.

Conclusion

I hope we all come to realize that emotional intelligence goes beyond merely understanding and managing our emotions. As I continue my journey of self-discovery and growth, I cannot emphasize enough the importance of emotional intelligence and emotional restraint. We have seen the positive impact of EQ in (1) the workplace, (2) educational settings, (3) personal relationships, (4) mental health, and even (5) leadership roles.
